'66 with inline 6
..and other places they aren't. I know up in Eastern Canada they are damn near impossible to find and go for big dollars! I've had offers up to 1200.00 for the lightly rebuilt 289 from our 67 over the past year. As for buying and shipping them up from the states your looking at about 400.00 for shipping, add another 200.00 for a Brokerage fee and then the Provincial Sales Tax on top of that. A used block up there will sell for 500 to 750 and a complete engine 1000.00 and up.
the 6 was the basic model mustang, and everything about it was basic, the spindles were just strong enough for a 6, so don't try to make them hold an 8
and the front springs are different because obviously a v8 weighs more than a i6...
Get v8 spindles, and you will be good to go.
also, you may want to consider front disc brakes, kits are available for as little as 5 or 600, and some include the spindles you need.

I just might go that way, it is pretty reasonable compared to just buying the spindles by themselves. Thanks for the great info. What about the stock 6 rear end? Should this be OK just swapping the axels, or should I try to go with the whole rear end? Thanks again.
I live in So Cal. Waffles, and as much as you would think they would be easier to find they are not that much. There are ads in one of the car newspapers here but they are like 450 for the block with the heads. I might have to go there and get them if I can't find a better one somewhere else.
Thanks Joe,

Yeah, a 289 swap is overdone, that's why I went with a 347 in my 66 L6 Mustang! I lose the logic on this one. It is obviously not overdone by the person who owns the car and it is your car, do it your way.
You are doing it the right way - suspension and brakes first. Make the car safe and reliable. Then when you upgrade to a V8, you do so with confidence and great performance both going fast and stopping fast!

I'm another fan of keep the six. I bought my 6 banger 18 years ago and made the decision in spite of a lot of critical comments. I run mild performance and still get good mileage, There are plenty of performance parts on the market and a couple of sites that specialize in the Ford six. From as simple as split headers and duals to modified cams, carburation and high performance heads are now availible.
