I read in the FAQ that the firing order for a 289 is 15426378.

I dont know if i'm "reading" my engine right but the firing order is 15637248. I'm notsure how i'm supposed to read this but i'm looking at the order of the spark plug wires going from the distributer to thespark plugs, and clockwise from the top of the distributerits 15637248.

The previous owner, whose abuddy of mine,replacedthe engine, which was blown, with another 289earlier this yearat a local shop. On the receipts he gave me, it says it was replaced with a rebuilt Ford 289 ci engine. I called the shop to confirm this and the guy said they removed a 289 and put a 289 back in. Its a pretty well known shop so I dont think they'd do anything stupid.

Im pretty sure its a 289 cause while he had it, he replaced the cylinder heads, intakemanifoldand headers with 289 parts I got for himfrom a friend of mine that works at a parts shop. I compared the cylinder heads and intake manifold part #'s with those on the edelbrock site (they're edelbrock parts) and they are 289/302 parts.

It seems to be running fine. Should I change the order of spark wires to what I found in the FAQ, 15426378?? I was gonna try it at first but thought i'd post here before i do.

 

How are you looking at the cylinders? On Ford the right bank from front to back is 1-4 and the left bank from front to back is 5-8. It doesn't go back and forth from bank to bank like a Chevy does when you number the cylinders

 

the 15426378 is the correct firing order on my 289, and the service manual reflects the same. By the way, the cylinder numbers are marked on the intake manifold, and military left (passenger side) is #1.

Just remember this, Ford numbers by bank, 1-4 on 1 bank and 5-8 on the other, whilst Chevy goes back and froth, 1L,2R,3L,4R etc alternatiing sides(Chevy did this because they numbered cylinders by their respective rod's position on the crank in order from front to rear). Regardless though, the farthest forward cylinder is always 1, which on a Ford is the passenger side, and a Chevy is the driver's
