Default Strange leak

I recently went on vacation for a week. I hadn't driven my Mustang for at least a week before leaving for vacation. When I got home, there was a puddle of ATF under the car. I felt around all the transmission lines and power steering hoses, but everythingfelt dry.

I cleaned up the puddle and took the car for a drive. The leak mysteriously stopped.

I drive my Mustang once a week or so. No leaks. Its been over a month.

Well, I didn't get the Mustang out for the last couple weekends. Now there's a puddle of ATF under the car again!

Thefluid is making a trail, so I can't pinpoint exactly where its hitting the floor. I'm leaning more toward the power steering pump than the transmission.

I had a similar problem with my 76 F150 with a C6 trans. I would drive it once or twice a week and everything would be fine, no leaks. If I let it sit for any extended period of time I would see a pool of tranny fluid underneath it. I figured out that it was an old worn out transmission pan gasket. What would happen is after I would drive it around and get it up to operating temp everything would expand and the gasket would absorb the fluid. After stopping and sitting everything would cool down and after awhile the gasket would let go of the fluid and then it would have a channel out of the car and spill out everywhere. I know it sounds weird but that was the only conclusion I could draw because after I replaced my gasket with a fresh one everything was fine.

I had the motor and transmission out of the car this summer. While it was out, I had the front and rear seal, gasket and filter replaced in the transmission.

I'm thinking the fluid is leaking out of the power steering pump, behind the pulley. I think it may be dripping on the floor without hitting anything on the car.

Try to get under there with a light or get it on a lift, that should show you were the leak is coming from. Take a picture for us if you can.

When I was rebuilding my suspension the car was on blocks for about a month and I did not start it during that time. 2 days before I finished I was under it tightening up the last few pieces and the tranny started dumping fluid from the pan. It was about 3 drops per second. I started the car up and let it warm up, and it has not leaked since.

Not sure how the PS pumps are built but it would be worth the effort to grab the pulley and check for bearing play. If it rocks around a lot thats the problem child right there.

Which one is loosing level on the dip stick the trans or steering pump? You should be able to notice a drop in one or the otherwith that kind of puddle.
