Default Explorer EFI

Hey guys (gals),
New to the website. I have a '65 coupe with a 5.0 carbureted engine that I eventually would like to convert to EFI. Has anyone done this with the Explorer intake? I understand that it is the tallest of the 5.0 intakes but also the best performer. I want to make sure that there will be enough hood clearance for it. Thanks.

should work fine. I don't think it's any higher than a GT40 intake and they will clear.
Check out my website for some general EFI info.

Hey RJ,

I'm in the process of converting to EFI at the moment, and coincidentally, am using an Explorer intake. I, too, was concerned about height until I measured the height of the manifold. It is slightly shorter than my current RPM Air-Gap manifold/Edelbrock AVS carb/hi-po air cleaner combo.

I'll post some pics once I get mine underway.

It's a shame Ford no longer makes the GT40 intakes and is being stingy with the patent and won't let anyone else make them. Not only did they perform really well, but they looked sexy.

The ACT(air charge temperature sensor) will need a mount drilled into the Exolpder lower, or mounted close to the MAF like the newer cars.
My Exploder intake is going on now.

Swap meets and Ebay are pretty much the only places you'll find them now. There used to be a few extra unused ones floating around, sold new several years ago, but even those are all gone now. I haven't seen but 1 on Ebay in the last year and a half. One of the best street intakes ever made for a EFI SBF. You can still get the GT40 lower from Ford(unless they d/c'd it) but the uppers are no where to be found.

Any reason not to put it in the upper intake? My lower doesn't have the flat boss for drilling and tapping.

Good luck on the manifold find James. It seems people really know the value of these things. I have yet to find a 5.0L Explorer intake, A9L computers, GT40 heads or anything else of real value as "bargain bolt-ons"in any of the pick-n-pulls that I frequent.

I got my Explorer intake for $200, an Accufab TB for $81 and a Pro-M MAF, airtube and K&N for $46 off of Ebay. Sniping and poorly worded listings are your friend.
