Default newbie question - fuel line

Had the driver side floor plan replaced recently (rust and holes of course) and they nicked the fuel line.

They 1st attempted a repair with a coupling but they "forgot" to tell me about the fuel line repair (I picked up the car in the evening and it was dark so I could not inspect the body work underneath). Once I got home it leaked a sizable puddle on my basement floor. When I moved it outside and placed a pan underneath the leaking segment I saw (with a flashlight) a "new" coupling.

Regardless, when I called them they agreed to replace it with a new monolithic fuel line at no charge. No harsh words because accidents do happen and they agreed to do the right thing!

Here are the questions -

1> They attached the back part of the fuel line to the sending unit (as well as the front part to the fuel pump) with a rubber hose and hose clamps - is that correct or should they have flared the end and used a metal/brass coupling?

2> Where the fuel line enters the engine bay through a hole on the driver side wall, they did not replace the grommet - is this an issue down the line (eventual ersion of the fuel line)?

Thanks for the help in advance!

There should be rubber hoses at the front and back and yes there should be a grommet going into the engine bay.

Sounds like its right except the grommet thru the inner fender. That could wear thru the fuel line in time resulting in a leak. Not good but an easy fix. Was their a grommet before they worked on the car? Often I see these are missing on the older cars, but still it should have one. You should be able to find one at most auto parts stores.

Thanks to all for the information - it was very helpful!

67ee - There was a grommet but, as with many other old rubber parts, it was dessicated and likely crumbled apart when they replaced it. Right now, that segment of the fuel line is eccentrically forward in the hole/aperture and my fear is the one you expressed (wearing a hole in the line). I will install a grommet.

Thanks - this forum is awesome.

Staighten the line! If it puts undue pressure on the grommet - it will still wear through and chaff/leak. badbadbad.
