RE: 87 8.8 in my 67
What are you talking about cutting the ends off? The housing does not need to be altered, just the spring perches. The housing is the perfect length already (for 67-68). All you have to do ishack off the suspension and coil spring mounts, then weld on leaf perches with the proper pinion angle. It's no more complicated in that sense than the explorer rear.
Most people run pipes out the back. That's the way it should be. The offset rear interferes with a normal dual exhaust and can also cause interference issues with the tunnel at extreme travel limits (unless you fab up a custom bumper) or when the rear is lowered (which is also common).
If you need 31 spline axles in an 8.8, I don't know why you'd do the swap in the first place. You're much better off at that point going with a 9".

alright so i got the axle today along with a set of 3.73's but the question is what do i do about the rear yoke for the driveshaft. obviously the one from 1967 isn't going to work with the foxbody flat mount plate thing, so what are my options and what do i have to do? thanks.

You would need to find out what size the U-joint is (or type). You could probably get this from any parts house. Doesa 67 Mustangtake a 1310 or 1350 U-joint?
