Default Rusty Scratches

I live in Utah, with lots of snow, salt, etc. My 70 has been here in Utah it's entire life, and it has little to no rust (at least visibly). The PO wasn't the brightest tool in the shed, and had it for a couple years, and scratched it in a couple places. They are small, maybe 1" at the biggest x 1/8" wide. I don't think these are just "surface rust, as the rust seems to be pretty embedded.

What is the best way to take care of this type of rust problem?

I've read masking it off, sanding out the rust with some sandpaper attached to the eraser of a pencil, and then priming, painting, etc. from there. What do you recommend?

That pretty much covers it. I live in Utah too, and my advise to you especially on a day like today is do not drive that car as much as you can in winter. The old sheet metal seems to rust as soon as salt is anywhere near.....bottom line is get the rust taken care of soon. It will spread. Did you get that car on Ksl?

Thanks for the response... and yeah, I would never drive in this weather. Salt and water is one thing, but these old mustangs have no control on pure ice.

Yeah, I got it off of KSl in July, did you see it when it was posted?

I did see it. Almost went to go look at it to buy. I found a 1969 at the same time that was in really good shape except for the motor. So I bought that one and rebuilt the motor (347 stroker) and now have a really nice one. There was a blue 70' on around the same time I was considering.

Yeah, I remember the blue one. There was also a green 70 coupe w/ boss stripes in st. george that looked pretty nice.

I had a '69 about 2 years ago, loved it. After I got it running, I had to sell it . 70 coupes are my favorite though, and I'm excited that I found one in such great shape. It has many projects planned out for it, but that's why I bought it. Maybe we'll see ya at one of the car shows around.

Yeah, there is one in Magna that I may go to. The guy who runs it lives by me. I will be racing it at RMR as well.
