buy the gears and unless you have done it b4 take it to shop (like a 4wheel drive shop) and pay them to set it up for you and mite aswell do the bearings to just use good grease going back in good luck
You might even find a deal where someone has an 8" pumpkin with 3.55s already set up and will take your current unit in trade. Ebay has that kind of deal from time to time.
that'd be nice..a 3.55 trade
my friends done a few gear swaps on his 4runner (5.29s!) so he might be able to help somewhat
or i'll take it to the shop if it's not too expensive, thanks for the info

i've seen posi pumpkins on ebay rebuilt with your choice of gear for less than 500 bucks. i was looking at swapping my 3.40's for some 3.80's

yeah, its pretty straightforward. you have to side the axles out to remove the chunk but thats not very hard at all. i've never done one, but i wouldn't hesitate to swap one.
doing the gears and having to align everything is a whole other story, but swapping the whole chunk is pretty basic.

+1 on the posi swap at the same time, Dave. With the higher gears you'll be burning your tires off even more and traction will become more and more of an issue. If you wanna beat the rice at your school, its definitely more than worth it.
