There's another book called 'Rebuilding Small Block Fords' by Tom Monroe that's really popular. Very comprehensive and has plenty of pictures and detailed explanations.

Having done it myself, it's not that complicated. You should have a complete set of sockets and combo wrenches anda torque wrench (or two), but the only specialty tool you should need is a ring compressor which can usually be 'rented' at your local chain parts store. It's good to have someone experienced watching over your shoulder, but lacking that you can always post here about any questions you may have. If in doubt, ask There are some small but important things you need to pay attention to during asembly, so let us know when you get to that point.

I'm in the same boat. I just bought a 302 for a $100. I ordered the Small Block book by George Reid. I'm going to go through the book tonight. I've always done the basic maintenance on all of my vehicles, but nothing close to a rebuild. I'm can't wait to start disassembling.

Rebuilding SBF's is actually pretty easy, they're simple engines. Trying to rebuild a 4.6/5.4L Modular for a first engine rebuild however, would be an almost garunteed $12,000 disaster without proper assistance.

Yeah, and Ford's way of setting valve timing on the Mod motors is completely re-freakin-tarded. Not to mention you needthe special toolsjust to set the freakin timing.

lol. we never had those kits and we built all kinds of asian DOHC V6's and such. you just gotta know wtf you are doing.

when i started working in a machine shop i was intimidated by the foreign stuff but really its like anything else, you do a couple sets of those crazy *** heads and next thing you know you can do it with your eyes closed.

i will admit i sent out a pair of 4.6 heads with one of the cams installed backwards though (damn ford for spacing the cam journals evenly [>:])

just pick a good engine shop. You have options.. You can let them completed the machine work and put it together...

I had mine do the machine work and get the engine kit (gasket, cam, rings, etc). I spend a long night putting it back together... Mine cost $1200..
