If I were you, I would invest in a timing light. I got an awesome chrome one from Sears for 50 bucks and it was a nice one. You can get them cheaper, but it will be very helpful. Especially if you end up drag racing it, you will be able to dial in your timing to increase performance.

aye. forget about setting ignition timing if you don't have a timing light (strobe).
You'll never get it right without one. (yes ... near enough but not right)
So if you don't have one, buy one or contact a friend who might have one.
If you get one then let us know we'll point you to the right direction on how to do that.

In addition to that:
the older distributor work with points, the newer without. Usually the timing shoudl stay right once adjusted, but if you have points, they'll burn eventually and this effects correct timing. If they're half dead and you replace them it usually brings your timing back to the ballpark it should be in.

So you might want to check on that first.
Let us know if you're still using points ...

Well i picked up a craftsman timing light, its pretty nice, its all metal and everything, and me and my uncle did it.

It was surprisingly easy once I did it for the first time.

Thanks!
