Thats what I thought. Another question how do you know if your water pump is working correctly in this case.

I read in a book that the pre 66 timing covers were different and not compatable with the post 65 water pumps.... (oem alum pumps pre 66, oem cast iron pumps post 65...)

I don't know if this is a "real" issue or an urban legend perpatrated by my "Ford interchange" book.

Look to see if your head gaskets are installed properly. There should be a little bit of the gasket showing near the corner of where the block and heads meet at the front of the engine. If not, it is installed backward and not cooling the head properly.

Underdrive pulleys cause this problem relatively easily; I have no experience with aluminum rads, so I can't comment on that. Another tip from someone who works on Flathead Fords (known for being bad overheaters) is to run 2-3 parts water to one part antifreeze - the water handles heat better, and still leaves enough antifreeze to lube the water pump, prevent rust, etc.

Here's a site from which I take much of my cooling advice:

Most 2 row aluminum radiators use either 1" or 1.25" or 1.5" sipes, so they are substantially "larger" than a 4 row copper/brass. They have more surface area contact with the cooling fins, and transfer heat better.

Head gaskets are fine. On the weekend I will try the electric fan. If that doesn't work will think about the pulleys and water pump. The joys of old cars

Are you using a standard or reverse rotation water pump? Do you have it rotating the right direction? Show us a picture of your water pump and timing cover.

Its a reverse action water pump, it is on an Australian Windsor motor (off a 70 Fairlaine). I will take some photographs tomorrow afternoon and post them.

It does cool the motor down after I hit 20mph if that helps. It just heats up in traffic.

I have a 66 and had a ton of cooling issues when I bought my car. I bought a 2-row Northern aluminum radiator and it helped a ton. Here is a writeup of what I did on mine:

I would highly recommend an electric fan with the highest CFM rating that has enough clearance for your water pump (as65/66's are pretty tight). That was my first upgrade and it got my car cooling pretty well with an old 3-row brass radiator that had some rust buildup.

where are you located derwin? What sort of ambient temperatures are you driving in? (where'd you get that Fairlane engine????)

warm 302 with an electric 2800cfm fan should be fine, but evenelec fans work better if shrouded. This is especially the case in a 65/66 car which has a narrow radiator. 2 core alum should work equally as well as 3 or 4 core copper/ brass.

do you run a filter in the top hose? if not I'll bet you got blockage issues following the rebuild.
