Default ADVICE NEEDED

I am hoping someone on this forum can give me a little hlep. I have a 65 coupe, warm 302W ,2 row aluminium radiator, underdrive pulley's, 180 degree thermostat, a/c, metal shroud, 2 inch spacer, 13 pound radiator cap. The whole set up is 1500 miles old after a full rebuild restoration. All the above is brand new. 5 blade OEM A/C Fan is one inch from the radiator and is half out of the shroud. I run coolant and water wetter. I have read all of the posts on this site, and there is a lot, but they don't seem to help me in this case.

The car runs great about 35 mph sitting on about 185 degrees. It sees traffic and after 10-15 minutes its up to 210 degrees and rising until I find back streets to drive down for a couple of minutes and let it cool back down. This is taking the enjoyment out of the car.

There is no room for electric fans in front of the radiator due to the condenser being there (I might be able to fit a thin 7 inch there but thats all). If I took out the fan and put in a 16 inch electric fan with 2750cfm will that help the cooling or is there something else I should do first. I am after any suggestions. At this stage I am considering the fan option seriously.

I would dump the 2 row radiator. I have had poor cooling with them. Is it a cross flow? What do you mean the fan is "half out of the shroud? Is it a clutch fan?

i would get a bigger radiator, but underdrive pulleys cause your water pump to run slower, and it can create a heating problem.

My 1st Guess would be a radiator problem,I would go with a 3 or 4 row.Keep in mind that just because parts are new doesn't necessarily mean they are good.Something as simple as a Radiator cap can cause overheating problems. Are you sure the Water Pump is working properly?Keep us updated and Good Luck with it!!

Definitely need a 3-row radiator; the factory 2-rows were barely adequate for stock engines.

That said, 210F isn't that hot. I wouldn't worry until you hit 220+. In fact, 195-210 is about good running temp. 185 is pretty cold and can reduce efficiency by increasing quench in the combustion chamber. Sounds like you're probably running a 165 t-stat. I'd recommend a 185 or 190/195 high-flow to cut down on carbon buildup in the chambers.

With a high-flow 195 thermostat, high flow aluminum pump, 3 row brass radiator, clutch fan, and fan shroud, my 331 runs at 195-210 most of the timedepending on the weather and whether or not the car is moving.

Thanks for that people. I am going to have a look at the pulley and see if I can fix that, could be the problem. I am also thinking of putting a high performance water pump in there, would that mean there would be no need to change the pulley.

James has suggested that water wetter and coolant together reduce the cooling capability of each so I will drain the engine and radiator and try distilled water and water wetter. The radiator isn't the stock two row it is an aluminium two row from Texas Mustang.

I will keep you guys informed.

Okay doen the royal purple and distrilled water didn't help much. Got the fan as close as I could safely to the radiator didn't help in temp, still climbing at 210 degrees in traffic. Have scored a 16 inchelectric fan with cfm of 2750. It is a slim line at 3.1 inches. The fan measures 15.75 inches and 16.25 inches which basically covers a good majority of the radiator fin area. I only have four inches between the radiator and the fan pulley. I see a lot of people use a shroud and attach the electric fans to that. I could only put a flat plate covering the rear of the radiator with very minimal spacing. Is there really any need for a shroud on the electric fan in this situation.
