Default speedo help!!

well my speedo doesnt work. I took out the cluster and the black rod inside doesnt spin from the inside of the car. i took it out of the trans and it has a yellow gear in it that has hardly any tention and i turned the gearasmy dadwatched the rod andit wasnt spinning on the other end. Wheres my problem? I think the gear is broke possably cause it spins freely. What do yall think it is? Do i needa new cable?

A new cable is the first place to start. They are cheap and relatively easy to replace. Pull the old one out, lube the snot out of a new one and slide it in. Since you already have the gear on the side of the tranny out, hook the new cable to it an see if it turns the cable up at the speedo.Put everything back together and take the car out for a spin. If the speedo still isnt working, then you have narrowed it all down to the gear on the tranny output shaft. To replace that gear, you'll have to pull the rear shaft housing on the tranny. Hope this helps.
