Default RE: Short or long headers?

in my expirence too much exhaust WILL hurt a stock engine. stock 289 + long tubes with 3" collectors (which most have) + 3" exhaust = more top end hp but less torque at the bottom end where you need it. so what this meant fo me was that my highway mpgs were btter but my tire burning power at the street was actually worse. i like the cast iron hipo manifolds with 2 1/4 pipe and some good low restriction welded mufflers. spintech i have heard is best but i like the flowmaster 40 sound. also tri y headers are very good for torque and have a 2 1/2 collectors that are better for street use. depending on what you are trying to do with your engine later on i would recommend tri y w 2 1/2 pipesfor more high performance street engine. or hipo manifolds for a mostly stock engine that you cant to get a little better performance from. also I agree with kalli get some good ignition or at least an ignightor (<spelling? sorry) better wires and plugs. duel plane intake with a sensible 4bbl carb. lots of fun ways to spend money on your car. remember this is just my opinion
