408 stroker kit on its way
OK I orderdered my 408 stroker kit yesterday, should be here in 10 days. 351w block is getting bored and cleaned. Now I am looking at the top end.I will be using some edelbrock rpm 60cc heads, rpm intake, to keep compression at 9.4 to 9.5. I am thinking of not getting an rpm cam and would rather have a competition flat tappet thumper cam. Since intake and heads are working from 1500-6500, what would happen if I used either a thumpr that works from 2200 to 6100 or 2000 to 5800? I really like the sound of these thumpr cams.

i hear a alot of people say that once you build an engine with a flat tappet, you will wish you put a roller because the price difference is minimal. just my opinion, but since your putting a bunch of money in heads and rotating assembly, dont skimp with the cam.

I wish there was only a small price difference between them. If your block is a factory roller block, then I say go with a roller cam. Otherwise, stay with the flat tappet. I have the same Edelbrock RPM setup on my 302 (sam cam specs with a different firing order) and it doesnt really start to pull untill about 2500-3000 rpm. The down side is that at doesn'treally have a thumpy idle at all. It is really smooth. Im like you though, I like to be able to here the cam "count the licks" so I was a little dissappointed about it. Either way, youll be fine with whatever cam you pick as long as its rpm specs are between 2000 and 6500. Let me know what cam you decide on and how it turns out.

Between having different heads and now a stroker, advertised RPM range on cams pretty much are meaningless to you at this point. My recommendation to everyone who gets to this point is to simply pay a little more and have a cam custom speced by a pro. Tell him the rpm range you are looking to make power in, the amount of power you want, and all the rest about the motor and they will make you the cam that is just right for the application (assuming you use a guy that actually knows what he is doing...other wise the summit racing cam tech line might as well just make you a recommendation).

Yeah, with that stroker you'll be able to run a much larger cam than you would on a stock or mild 351. A custom ground cam would definitely be a good idea, but lacking that I'd call Comp Cams and ask them to recommend a cam for you. I don't have a lot of faith in Summit's tech line, but Comp Cams' has always been great to me.
