is there gas? spark? can it be related to your cold start problem with the choke? have you done anything about the choke?

Hiya,

100% sure its not the alternator. the alternator is only there to charge the battery. You can run a car without an alternator no problem until your battery dies.
you need 4 things to start it:
1. a starter and battery (obviously that works when it's turning over)
2. fuel
3. spark
4. compression

to 2.
how do you know you have gas ? you can either:
- get rid of aircleaner, push the throttle and see if there's gas coming through
- disconnect the fuel hose from carb and put the hiose into a container (so you don't spill). start engine. does the fuelpump provide you with fuel? take out the petrol filter in carb if you can or make sure it's clean
- try pouring half a shotglas full of petrol into the carb from top. does the sound change when trying to start ?

to 3.
if you have a good known spark plug lying around, connect it to 1st cylinder spark lead. hold thread to engine or ground with electricla plier.
Turn over engine. do you get a spark? if yes: blue or orange ?

to 4. does the engine sound like whop whop whop when starting or is it rather a weeeeeeeehhhhhh ?
measure compression if you have a compression reader

As stated, it wasn't the alternator.. Unless you had some weird electrical problem.

Was the alternator siezed? If the pulley was frozen it could prevent the engine from turning over fast enough to generate the needed compression to start.
