The amazing exploding lock washer
I swear this is true. My wife and I were sitting in the family room watching TV tonight when we heard something happen in the kitchen...like someone throwing astone against the wall and then hearing it ricochet. Here is what I found. I had been soaking the bolts which held my bumper mounts to the frame rails in some naval jelly to remove the surface rust. On one of them the lock washer had partially broken when I took it off the car and the washer was jammed on the bolt...with the broken opening jammed halfway off the bolt. The bolt was actually kind of wedged into the opening. I was planning to just twist it off with pliers after cleaning up the bolt. What happened was the washer, which was under pressure, broke in two and one part bounced off the bottom of the kitchen cabinet and the other larger piece rocketed itself across the room, bounced off a five gallon jug of water (which it gouged) and ended up on the floor 20 feet away from where it started. For the photos I "reassembled" the washer so you could see what it looked like before the event. Strange but true.
