I don't know if there is a correct location. I usually jack my car up using the floor jack on the rear axle diffentialor the front cross member behind the oil pan. I haven't broken anything, yet. I place the jackstands on the rear axle or the frame section near the front of the leaf spring. The jackstands at the front go on the frame section just under the firewall.

Newer cars can be jacked up by therocker panel seam, but I wouldn'ttry that on a '66 Mustang.

Anywhere on the actual frame should be fine, as well as the rear diff. Just don't put it under the sheetmetal and expect that to hold unless you've got some frame behind that metal.

Anywhere on the frame is good. Lots of people use the front crossmember and rear diff as shortcuts to get the end lifted, but there is potential for damage there.

I put mine under the rear axle, one on each side. For the front, I'd stay away from the frame rail entension or the floor extension, as this can tend to bend or get damaged. I would put them under the forward part of the frame rail or around where the crossmember mounts to the frame on each side. And always protect the underside by placing something on top of each jack stand, like an old sock, if it is painted or coated.

For Gods sake dont use the oil pan to jack the front end!! LOL My son didnt know where to put the floor jck when we had to replace the steering box. Luckily he didnt do any real damage except for a dented oil pan. Pulled it off....pounded it out......checked it for leaks and slapped it back on. Point is.....dont place a jack anywhere anything will bend.
