400 cubic inches of potential
So i got the chance to buy a 400ci engine out of an old beat up torino the other day from a friend for like $200 but i dont know if i want it. First off, is it a big block? I figured it was but not sure of it. If i did get it I'd want to maybe make it into a 429. My question is how do i get it to that point, you know, how big of a bore, do i stroke it? I dunno that much when it comes to customizing and making power with an engine, im just good with identifying them and rebuilding, not with tweaking. Could you guys help me out? Oh, i also have a C6 i planned on putting in but didn't know if a big block would match up with that. Frankly, I've never worked with big blocks ever.
its a small block its the same engine series as a cleveland http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_335_engine
If it's a Cleveland then it's not a big block, so it's not going to be a 429. You could bore/stroke it to 429 inches maybe, but it won't be an actual 429. If it's a 400M I'd stay away from it unless you have money and don't mind having to look hard for parts. The Modified Clevelands can make some great power, but they're really odd birds, so finding parts may be difficult.
go to tmeyerinc.com and call him. he will tell you anything you need to know and has great support for the 400. the 400 is a good motor just had no factory performance. the heads have the same flow as a set of gt40's so they will be good for near 400 hp.
the 400 has a 351w crank setup (pretty much besides stroke), has a 460 oiling and electrical system as well as bell housing and the 400 has 351c heads and a lot more in common. its not really an odd ball at all if you think about it, its just ford mutt with its pushrod engines. dont be afraid of something different, thats why you drive a ford anyway.
