331 stroker build, Advice wanted.
Longer rods put less strain on moving parts and cylinder walls/pistons than shorter rods. Formula 1 engines run rediculous rod ratios, like 2.6 iirc. But they also turn nearly 20,000rpm. 347 vs 331 could depend on where they make power. You could have them each make the same power but the 347 will do it at lower rpm, they could end up having the same wear by virtue of the shorter rod engine turning less rpm. That being said, I chose a long rod 302.
Heres my updated list, I am still working so be patient with me and thank you everyone for your advice.

go custom!...
i want to know why the 347 is not as good as a 331?
because someone read a magazine said so?...
did you know your 331 is using the same piston as a 347..how does the wrist pin sit next your ring land? i bet it's the same as a 331..
show me proof that a properly built331 will out live a properly built 347 then i'll shut up..

don't forget that you need to change the distributor gear when using the roller cam and you need to get a conversion flexplate for the c-4. If your going through all the trouble to build a stroker for a non smogable car then don't go with a smogable cam. whether you go with a 331 or 347 get a F cam or x-cam or another type of cam with better specs than an E.
To get 300rwhp you could do a rebuild with flat top forged pistons, AFR 185's, a good cam and roller rockers, good intake ( air gap at least), 2 1/2 exhuast, windage tray and stall converter for the c-4.
What you do a stroker for is the torque.

A 331 piston is taller than a 347 piston, they are not the same. This is because the 331 has a shorter stroke and needs a taller piston to reach the top of the bore. The 347 needs a shorter piston because it has a longer stroke and if you used 331 pistons then they would come out of the top of the block and hit the head when the engine was rotated.
Since you are already going with a roller cam... Have you looked at the new Thumpr series cams from comp? I wanted to run one of these so bad, but I didn't want to spend $550 bucks on a set of retro-fit lifters to fit my 72 model block. I was gonna go with the "Big ***** Thumpr" which is the biggest they make. It is supposed to sound really awesome and have great power according to Comp.
Thumper cams are going to sacrafice power for sound. And piston compression height doesn't have anything to do with stroke, it's about rod length. All things being equal, a 331 will last longer than a 347 given the same rpm and cylinder pressure, same pistons/rings etc. That's just physics, shorter rod ratio = more piston side loading from a steer rod angle. Whether it's enough to make a difference in a street car seems arguable. No one has done any quantitative studies on it. Maybe the rings wear out from combustion pressure before they wear out from side loading, maybe not. I prefer the longer piston dwell and reduced piston velocity at TDC from longer rod setups, so you can burn better at higher rpm, and turn more rpm safely. It comes down to whether you want power at a lower or higher rpm. The good general rule of thumb though is the bigger the engine, the bigger the power.
does anyone have a good reccomendation for the cam for this motor? I would like a comp cam for the most part and would like to keep it around $300 give or take some cash. I wouldn't like to spend the arm and leg on the $5-600 cams.
Honestly I think I would still like to stay with the 331 just from other peoples opinions that I have spoken with and trust, also these d80e heads are not going to flow enough for the 347 output even when fully ported like they are going to be.
Anyone know a good set of longtube headers for around 4-500$ that will fit and work in the 67 stang.
thanks,
kevin

I'm running Hooker Super Comp LT's on mine, work fine. Bit of a pain with mech clutch linkage, but I'm running hydraulic now. Cam is gonna depend on what heads it'll end up having in the long run, what rpm you wanna turn etc. Call and talk to the people at Comp/Crane etc and they can tell you.
