grenada brakes question
Wondering what you guys think. I am planning performance upgrades on my 66 and want to upgrade the front brakes to disc. I was looking at the kits available from $600 to $1000 and was going to do that until I talked to guy who told me to go the the junk yard and buy grenada spindles and then I could purchase new rotors, calipers etc and it would be cheaper and just as good. What do you all think. Thanks
Good luck on finding anything usable off a '70s vintage car in a junk yard. As far as I can tell, the best bang for the buck brakes-wise is the kit from www.discbrakeswap.com. The guy that runs it is a member here and very easy to deal with. Not sure if the price has changed, but it was $525 + shipping for me. Very complete kit.
Straw, that is exactly what I did. I had a set of Granadas on my car already, but they were total junk and everything needed replaced anyways.
I broke it all down and the parts I kept were the spindles, caliper brackets, bolts for the caliper brackets, and the bearings (they were still good). Those got cleaned and painted and the rest hit the trash.
I bought new dustshields, caliper hoses, ceramic pads, and the required Granada tie rods from CSRP.
I bought drilled/slotted rotors off of ebay somewhere. Calipers I got locally and had them powdercoated gloss black.
Anything else that I cant think of I picked up at the local Autozone.
Altogether it came to 415$ for both assemblies and I think they turned out great. I got pics if your interested.

Thanks, I just got off the phone with csrp and it sounds like if I want to use my original wheels, I would need to go with the OEM style disc brake kit. (Swap 1) If I go that route for $525 I didnt think that was too bad, and I would imagine it would be a huge improvement. Any comments?
Doesnt his kit come with the mastercylinder and proportioning valve as well? If so, it definitly isnt a bad deal.
Yea, 14 wheels are a tad too small for 11" rotors but I've heard of some people making it work...probably grind down the caliper just enough to clear the wheels.

whoa! i ddint even see the swap 1 on there website (the kelsey hays kit) it looks like the same as the ssbc kit. now im thinking about doin that and saving the other 400 dollars id be spending on the ssbc kit on the rear brakes
I have style steels on the car now, and he claims they will fit, hope so. I sure like the look of torque thrusts though. The ol' lady is already about to kick me out with the talk of motor mods, rear end change and now brakes, so one fight at a time!
