For anyone that is interest, www.gassavers.org is a good site for stuff like this. There are alot of people on there that modify cars for fuel economy purposes, but there are also alot that practice technique (like me) instead of modifying. You can also set up an account to keep track of your average mpgs and stuff, and see your improvement overtime with graphs n such. With the help of these guys, my record so far is 78mpg over 300miles in my p.o.s. beater...

I personally wouldnt modify a classic for fuel economy, its a better idea to get a cheap beater to do that, but practicing better conservation methods is ok in my book.

If you want fuel economy buy a Honda. I did and drive the snot out of it getting 30mpg. My 69 gets 7mpg! You drive the old ones to smell like gas when you get out. Even if you max out an old 289 or 302, you may not get 14-16mpg and like said above, who knows what it will cost you to do it.

Speak for yourself, GypsyR, on the AOD. I get in the 69 with a 4 speed toploader so I do not have to lug around in OD and downshift when I want to pass someone. With a 1:1 4th, you just punch it and move on!

honda, toyota whatever.

do you guys get those little Smartcars or diesel Peugeots?
you'd be getting pulled over by the highway patrol all the time for driving too slow and then shot at because they think you are a bank robber for wearing that ski mask when all you're really doing is hiding from anyone you might know now or at any time in the future.[8D]

+1 These cars just aren't meant to get good fuel mileage. Although I have a theory where if you drive faster you get there faster, hence using less gas.

All these great suggestions will result in improved mileage, but let's not forget the obvious benefit of driving downhill. Both ways.

Is this a real question? Wrong car to be driving if you want good gas mileage.

Im not impressed by the Smartcars at all. What are they, like 50mpg. Thats bad given the new technology of the car. The Metro XFi is rated at 58mpg from the factory back in the 80's

ok... ill ask what about when alternate fuels get changed or whatever. Will there be away for us to convert our engines to E85 or whatever else is new?
Or just say, oh well, I love my car to much and pay for the $$$.00 Gas a gallon.
