Front frame rail extensions
I'm looking for some input on what I should do with the frame rail portion near the front torque boxes. I "think" I might invest in a MIG welder and take on fixing the torque boxes and the frame rail extensions. The bottom portion of the torque boxes are gone and the part of it touching the frame rail has some rust damage (it's not all the way through). Would it be safe to cut out just that part of the frame rail and weld in a patch? If I had to replace the entire, frame rail extension, how hard is it to detach it from the floorpan and the point where it attaches to the front frame?
Thanks!
Thanks!
The torque boxes can be a pain to remove. They are attached on all sides, connecting many pieces together. If the bottom portion of the box is gone, and the rest is good, then you can probably get away with removing the bottom section and welding in just that replacement piece. You'll have to buy the entire torque box though, and cut off the piece you need. I don't think they sell individual pieces of the torque box. I would replace the entire torque box if it were me. The frame rail extensions, I assuming your talking about the part the goes under the seat pans, are not hard to remove and replace. Cut out the welds, clean em up, prep the new extensions, and weld them in. You may want to rust prevent any new metal before installing, just make sure your welding points are clean bare metal.
Thanks. If I sand the "lip" of the frame rail, should I be able to see the spot welds? I see your Mustang is on jacks; have you (or is it possible) to weld upside down?
