When you do the electrics take the time and do it right, upgrade to an electronic ignition, it will save you a boat load of time later[sm=smiley18.gif]. im running into a LOT of elecrical problems on the second time around because on the first, a lot of short cuts were taken

I keep hearing that an electronic ignition is the way to go... How does this differ from the stock setup that this old girl has currently?

And what types are the most recommended? I am guessing MSD or Mallory is the top dogs? What all would I need to make this happen?

Default Update - My New Project

Well I took some time from the forum to welcome a new son, and get some other honey do's done that would have kept me from being in the garage with the other woman...

Wanted to give an update on the project. and I will add pics soon.

Engine in out of the doghouse, as is all the of the fuel system.. working thru removing the electrical and all the brake lines and connectors. On rebuild all of the fuel and brake parts.. doesn't make sense to leave them in on this project when the cost or replacing them is low compared to what other mods I am doing.

Car is due to be soda blasted completely on December 1st. it will then get a coat of primer to keep safe, and Por 15 on the bedpan, under the whole underbelly of the vehicle, and in the wheel wells. Once this is all done, I will have it painted white inside, and red outside...

Then the new suspension goes on, I got the Global west coil over front and tribar rear. I also went with the Willwood brake kit front and back.. very excited about how this will look on the car.

I am keeping the stock 289 in the car, but upgrading the heads, cam, intake, carburetor... alright so I am keeping the 289 block. everything else will most likely get updated.

Might take me another year at this pace, but I am reaching one of those 'milestones' and am re-energized about the project.

As things progress I will send out pics.

I have questions on whether to stay with the generator, or go alternator... leaning towards the alternator, but I don't know if I will be able to reuse much of the older stuff I took off.

Go with the alternator, less maintenance and betterr reliability. As for converting from points to electronic ignition, it is a simple as PerTronix. This allows you to convert your existing distributor to an electronic ignition. If you want to replace your distributor, I use MSD, but MAllory, Crane, etc. also work.

Took the engine and tranny out today. It went smooth and no hiccups... I would post pictures, but since I haven't attained that 50 post limit yet, I am unable to... Sucks for the Noobs like myself that want to share in their excitement, but Oh well.

Oh and to boot I got My new suspension front and back along with disk brake conversion. I ended up going with Total Control, as all the searches I did on this and other forums rated it better for the buck. It is Incredibly sharp looking and you can tell that they spent quite a bit of time on the product in engineering.
