No, you need a T5 bellhousing for a cable arrangement. I'm not that familiar with a 5 bolt block/bellhousing. Will a later 4 speed bellhousing ( or a T5 bell) even bolt up to a 5 bolt engine? And just be missing a bolt? Or is the bolt pattern completely different?

can i use the cable clutch set up with an early bell housing?
I am about 98% sure that the early bell housing can be adapted to the cable clutch...

This will require some welding, but it is a fairly simple procedure... Check out the MustangSteve website out really well... this conversion process is in there somewhere.

Ok, I reviewed the website and while there are not directions there for a bell housing, there are directions for a scatter-shield. I am of the opinion that the directions could apply equally for a stock housing except that welding probably should not be done, but drill and tap should work fine in conjunction with an adjustable ball pivot.

In other words, if you really want it to work, you will need to plan it out well, but it won't be really difficult or expensive.

do you guys have a picture of a 5 or 6 bolt bell housing?
is it possible to fit a 6 bolt bell housing into a 5 bolt 289 engine?
thanks

You are in a pickle. The 5 bolt bell housinguses 5 bolts to secure it to the engine so a 6 will not work. It also uses a different bolt pattern to bolt up the transmission. The adapter plates I have seen will only work with the 6 bolt bell housing due to the different transmission bolt pattern. Start by confirming that you have a 5 bolt bell housing. How many bolts secure the bell housing to the block? For those that are wondering you can use a cable clutch with an early style 6 bolt bell housing. You have to get the pivot/fulcrum that mounts inside the passengers side of the bell housing and eliminate the stock fork pivot on the drivers side.

I'm not sure if you can use the 5 bolt bell housing and put a T5 behind it. If you can get that to work you can use a cable clutch. Just change the fulcrum pivot point just like a 6 bolt bell housing. Did you figure out for sure if it was 5 bolt or 6 bolt?
