Canton's quality, engine back together
Built like a tank, that's all I can say. My Canton pan/pickup/windage tray came today, and it's all very heavy duty. They made it using thicker gauge material than I would have thought. It's very stout, and basically went in without much issue. Now I got the new thrust bearing back in, and the whole thing buttoned up, oil pressure is fine, and now the crankshaft doesn't move like a ****** when I depress the clutch. Still it chewed the crank deently and my crank thrust is at .036"[:@]. The guy who did my machine work said he's seen engines last with .030-.040 for years, so we'll see how far I can get before I have to replace the crank.
And the problem I had running the other oil with low ZDDP where the engine when at idle, would idle down about 300rpm when I depresed the clutch, is gone with the high ZDDP VR1 oil. I initially thought it was weak idle power because I had been messing with the carb/ignition/plug gap at the same time I changed my oil, but then I started to notice that the clutch wouldn't disengage when I intitally started to depress the pedal, and by then the bearing face was wiped, and the steel backing and the crank ate each other. Plan on cutting the filters tomorrow to compare the one from the last oil change, when this problem started, with the one from before that, when I had no problem. Even with .036" end thrust, now when I depress the clutch pedal at idle, the idle speed stays consistant, or drops myabe 25-50rpm for a split second then steadies back at the curb idle speed. Hard to tell since idle rpm jumps around by +/- 50-75 with the cam it has. It's small enough that it's basically not noticable unless you're really looking for it, and even then I'm not sure.
Anyway though, oil system stuff, Canton is better than I thought it would be, and I had high expecations to begin with.

Im a big fan of Canton also. My 66 has a 7qt Canton dual sump it is a beefy pan for sure.
I had to knock and tap a hole in it for the s/c oil return. Was tough to put the hole in, but it took the shape and taped very nicely.
Think ill switch the old 289 oil pan for a Canton also.

Sounds like you are doing pretty well there 67302... Sorry to hijack your thread but true66... you got any pics of your Milodon install? It would be cool to see some pics of your recent progress!
Yeah, it would seem the manufacturers of these oil pans decided to make them beastly. The guy who does my machine work has a whole rack full of Cantons, Milodons etc from blown up engines, and they all seem to contain "freely moving" engine parts pretty well!
