Default Before I apply the paint...undercoat?

Hi. I'm restoing a 1965 2+2 and I'm just about ready to shoot the base/clear. I'm hoping someone can help me with a couple of questions. My questions have to do with the factory undercoating.

Does the undercoat on the inside of the wheel wells (in the trunk area) go on before or after the color coat?

Does undercoating on the underside of the wheel wells (under the car) go on before or after the paint?

Also, did the factory spray undercoat in the area where the axle goes?

My car originally did not have any undercoating on the bottom of the car except I noticed some around the axle area (at least I think it was undercoating, either that or a 30 year build-upworth of dirt and grime), so I was wondering if that was a place the factory applied undercoat to keep the road noise down or something.

This is an early 1965fastback assembled in San Jose.

Thanks!

The trunk area inside the trunk wheel wells were undercoated before the cars were painted. Also the deck lid was on the caras they were painted (the bolts are color). I don't think any cars were undercoated from the factory and you may want to check with MCA to see what classes this will cause point loss. The dealers had 55 gallon drums of this undercoating and blasted the cars when they came off the trailer. This was part of a prep package that you got nailed for (back then it was just a few dollars). I think in the axle area it was more of a overspray of undercoat than intentional. May have been the angle they were spraying at. I think they pretty much lifter the car, remover the wheels, and blasted away. Here is a photo of an unrestored 65 trunk area.

ok, thanks. I got some 3M Body Schutz and a Schutz gun and I'll shootthe trunk area before I paint. Yeah, I wasn't sure about the undercoating near the axle, I couldn't tell if it was caked-on crud or undercoating. I guess it was crud. When I blasted it all off it came off in chunks.

What aboutthe wheel wells? Do they get blacked out with undercoat after the car is painted or is there overspray on top of the undercoat in the wheel wells?

Thanks!

It seems the wells were painted black firstat the factory then the dealers gave them a blast. I think, and don't hold me to this, but in the concours trailered class, no undercoating is allowed in the wells. You can check MCA since I haven't showed in that class for a while. On the trunk area, the seams were sealed and the sides were sprayed with a light and thin coat of undercoat, then painted body color. Good luck.

ok. I just looked in the "1964 1/2 - 1973 Mustang Detailing Guide". It is a little cryptic, but here's what it says:

Sound Deadener:

Applied after primer and before body color; Black, dealer installed; rear & front wheel openings some early models deadener was also placed on front bumper bracket assembly

Undercarriage:

If undercoated, everything must be undercoated, the body lines & gas tank, included (some overspray), no undercoating on driveshaft, transmission, rear end, exhaust springs & Plates.

Floor pans red oxide enamel, body color, dark gray or black undercoated

If not undercoated, tunnels primed, side floor pans body color with sound deadner, rear wheel housing & front inner fenders blacked out with sound deadener, primed with body color overspray & sound deadener including up & down braces. Tunnels may be black, red oxide or gray

Front fenders topside & splash guards sound deadener, red oxide primer, black from engine compartment, and primers show through missed areas. Bare metal circles where chassis was bolted to assembly line

San Jose undercariages may have Indian Fire enamel.

Right now my rear wheel housings are red oxide with primer overspray (no undercoat anywhere on the car except in the trunk).

Soall the sound deadener was applied at the dealer? But if thepaint was applied at the factory how could the dealer apply the deadener before the car was painted?

Thanks!

The deadener and undercoatare two different animals. The deadener is much thinner andwas usedon the line. The undercoating was done at the dealerships and often a Prep" package. Also your pinch weld is black if the car is a light color. This is done before the fenders are bolted on. They most likely used a hand shield or maybe nothing at all when sprayed. It carries over thebody color, which is over the primer on the bottom. Often the car color is very faint on the bottom of the rockers. If you plan to show in MCA events, then you may want to take a look at the classes as they will vary.
