I HATE Thiefs
True, I think a car alarm may deter some people, but it's not going to stop someone who is experienced.
On a similar note, I was watching "To catch a theif" on Discovery channel a couple weeks back, and a family who collected antiques and stuff were the "victims." They guy had spent $20.00 at Wal-Mart for some (now broken) door alarms. That's the mentality of it, people are cheap when it comes to protection, but greedy when it comes to the merchandise.

A few years ago someone broke into my church and stole tons of really expensive, brand new music equipment, and a 7k projector. not cool.
to the OP- your car insurance might cover the ipod and stuff. As long as your deductible is low, you might look in to that.

I also recently had someone attempt to steal my car ( Teacher caught the SOB). It just pisses me off to no endthat I spent thousands of hours making that car what it is, and some low life thinks he is entitled to steal it just because he doesnt have one.
here's what I purpose: get caught stealin somethin, get your hand cut off; that'll stop the Fu#$ers

Just make sure when buying a car alarm you don't put the cute little sticker announcing to the world what kind of alarm it is. So many people do it and it just kills me. If a good thief knows exactly what kind of alarm he is up against he might as well have the key.
I live south of Baltimore, here the big things are:
Street Light Poles, the damn things are 20' long and they put them in thier car
Cat converters, especially SUV's as they sit high (DD is a Jeep anda Highlander)
Air Bags, Toyota Corrolla is the most popular (daughters DD is a Corrolla)
New one this week: drilling a hole in the gas tank to drain it. Again SUV's mostly
And now the grand daddy of them all: Drum Roll Please : Last year a women walked out of her apartment complex to her 1st new car parked 50 feet from the front door. The entire front clip including bumper, fenders, and hood was gone. The car was about three weeks old.
