Insulation pads
Hi, I've gutted out the interior on my 73. I'm getting ready to go back in with Fatmat sound deadener, Home depot bubble insulation (the silver stuff)and carpet underlays and such.
There are several insulation pads in the quarter panels, kick panels, behind the rear seat (coupe), and up under the dash that I need to replace. Old ones were missing or tore as I removed them, and all were dusty messes.
I bought new kick panel pads, but I can't find the rear quarter panels, behind the back seat, or up under the dash.
The dash one in particular is on my mind. It's actually still in the car, but is coming apart and raining yellow bits of fluff all over the floor area under the dash. I have alot of the dash removed, so I can generally see the pad. This is not the firewall pad, that's still in place. The pad in question is above that and appears to insulate the upper dash from the lower (if that makes sense). Any way, I don't see anyone selling a replacement.
I'm considering using that bubble stuff that is double sided with aluminum that they sell at Lowe's and Home Depot to replace the Quarter panel insulation pads, and the insulation behind the rear seat. I'm thinking of doubling or tripling it up to match the thickness of the old nasty pads. It seems like this might be good for the dash too.
Question, is this bubble stuff ok to use in a car? Will it be too flamable or have other issues?
I know that the existing pad stuff is flammable. I once watched a guy at a junk yard set a mustang on fire when he was cutting a piece of sheet metal off for me. The car went up like a bonfire. So, I'm guessing that fire retardation isn't a main reason to keep something like the old pads in the car.
Thanks,
John
