302 oil pump question??
A friend is trying to sell me a built up, bored and stoked 302 motor with Aluminum heads and all sorts of goodies. He took the original block out of an '86 mustang. While I was at this house getting specs on the motor, which is on a stand is his garage, I noticed the motor was set up with a rear sump oil pan. Do I just need to change the oil pick up and the pan or will a rear sump motor not work in my '65? Sorry if this is a dumb question...
Rear sump will not work on a 65. You have to change to a front sump and change the oil pump. Pretty easy actually. What does he want for the motor? Will he gaurantee that the engine was built properly?
Are there any DIY write ups on what I need and how to do it? He's a buddy of mine and the motor ran REALLY strong for 3 months in his truck until he got T-boned at an intersection. He said he has a little over $4000 into it, but he only wants what he paid for the heads, which is $1500 bucks.
If it is on a stand now is the time to do it. You just need an oil pump, a pan and a gasket kit. Have your buddy help. It is really easy. What kind of heads are on the engine?
If you can keep you 289 all together someone will want to buy it. Keep it in the car so you can start it and let folks hear it run. You will sell it in a heart beat. You should get more than enough money to pay for the engine swap.
You don't need a new oil pump, the pumps are the same for front/rear sump. You will need a front sump pan and a front sump pickup though. As long as it's open you could put a new pump in anyway if it has some miles on it, they're cheap enough.
