66 convertable
Hey everybody, I am new here and I have some questions for you all.
I or I should say my wife has a 66 convertable mustang and we are neck deep in a daily driver reproducton. We have done everything you are not supposed to do when restoring a car and we did it all twice, so you all should know where I am coming from on this. the guy that did our body and paint said he ran the vin# on a decoder and he said that the vin# had an X in it and that the search said that there was only 500 of the car made. problem is he got the vin# of the frame and it does not match what I have titled. Also yeh you know he didn't write it down and he put the car back together. I can't find the vin in any of the normal places. The car also has 2 holes under the right headlight that looks like a badge or emblem belongs there. these holes are factory they are not drilled. this gut has done about a dozen of these cars and he said he has never seen these holes on any other car he has done. Can anyone shed any light on this maybe? I have another question about engines. I have been told that there is a way to drop the engine mounts to accomadate a 351 w and use the stock hood with out it hitting or rubbing. anybody have any experiance with this?
thanks for any info you all can come up with.

Although I have never seen it either, those two holes are where your build number badge went. At least that is my understanding. You can use 1965 motor mounts that will drop the engine for clearance. Take a read HERE to get a full picture of what is involved. Did you look on the driver's side inner fender to try to find the VIN? Getting any numbers off the frame won't tell you much.
Then, you haven't done everything to find the VIN number. The number will be on the inside of your driver's side inner fender. It is quite obvious you need to do some scraping off old paint to find those numbers then come back on here to get VIN dedoding information. After you have done some work to find the VIN by rolling up your sleeves and do some scraping, use the convenient VIN decoder at the top of this forum, and if you have further questions, please come back with your questions.

Agreed. You won't find the VIN anywhere on the frame primarily because Mustangs don't have frames! They're unibody cars. And if your body man told you there were 500 "X-code" 1966 convertibles made - run away from him as quickly as you can! There is no such animal as an X-code '66 anything. As already stated - you must scrape/scrub/sand the paint off the stamped VIN on your inner fender apron. It'll take you all of 3 minutes. Your VIN is waiting for you there under years of spray paint and dirt. You'll also find it on your driver's door data tag (unless of course that door has been replaced).
