Getting an old 66 running again
Okay, so I have an old 66 original 289 sitting out in the yard i'd like to get running again. I don't know much about the older ones even though it seems their simpler. haha So this iswhy I'm here since I have no friends to help me out, (they all left for college!). I was hoping you guys could help me. I just bought a new battery for it today. All the lights and such turn on inside and out, so electrical is hooked upI believe correctly. It turns over but won't even attempt to start. Idumped a little gas in the carb, and some in the tank, still nothing.so that's as far as I am. Any help would be great! thanks!

Doesn't look too too bad... Was it running when it was put out to sit and how long has it been sitting.... If it has been sitting along time and you live somewhere it freezes I would drain your water to make sure it had antifreeze in it... and then refill and check for leaks... second drain the oil and refill and check for leaks... If the carberator is sitting with open valves or there is place for dirt to gain entry you are gonna wanna remove components such as the manifold and start cleaning the heads and all.... of course this is all speculative!

Hope this helps a bit

I checked the antifreeze, full. and oil, full, and not too dark. (edit)No, the carb was covered, the filter's taken off in the picture for when I was trying to get it running, was clean and clear(/edit) I just would like to see about getting it to huff and puff before I spend the money for oil for a car i might have to pull the motor from. lol and how much is antifreeze now? $15 a gallon or something crazy?
Thanks.
Any other suggestions?

I agree, it sounds like no spark, but I'd make sure first. Pull the coil wire off the dist, hold it about 1/8" to 1/4" from the engine and crank to see if it sparks. may want to see if it will lay by itself or hold it with something insulated.
Yeah it sounds like no spark to me as well.... And thank you for the complement I love the guages as well and they work great. If you get tired of using gas you could also you starting fluid and just spray it in the carb and have someone roll it over... That should make for an easy start one it has spark ( if no spark is the problem)
