Default Wrong Rear Axel? I need to drive stang again

I snapped my driver side rear axel in half and I finally found a 1965 mustang 5 lug 28" axel but when I put it up to my old axel it was longer? I know the rear end is a Ford 8" because I bought some gears for it off jegs and they fit fine. I am totally lost and I really want to drive my car again.

Could a machine shop shorten the axel?

The two axles are both different sizes.. (At least in 67+).. sounds like you got the wrong side?

+1 on that. I just rebuilt my '67 8 inch. The two axles are definetly different lengths.
