The C4 wont be staying the car i want an overdrive. It seem the majority says 5-speed how hard is it to do the conversion.

Also those that say OD shift is lousy what do you mean not fast shift or not hard enough too hard?? Wouldn't be to worried about the shift to OD unless on highway or do you mean downshifting out of OD to pass. Also how was yours built with better clutches and such or a stock rebuild?

As far a HP i doubt it will be over 400 at the motor all the HP i want is like 330-350 at the wheels topsto beat my buddy's camaro. What kind of power do you loose through AOD tranny 10-15% ??

I'd have to say if it's for the weekend and you have a 351C I'd go with a 5 speed or even a 6 speed standard. I know my brother wishes Shelby would come out with a 6 speed for his ShelbyGT. I plan on removing the AOD in my 69 and putting in a 5 or 6 speed standard myself.

DEATH to the AOD! If the engineer is still alive who designed that thing, lets tar and feather him.

Another way to go with this is put on an after market OD box. They mount to the tail shaft and are activated with a switch. That would require a different drive shaft, but it may be easier than doing a tranny swap if you HAVE to have OD.

Sounds like somebody needs to find a good AOD builder. I am a Trans builder and former Senior Master Ford tech. AOD are great. I have had them behind 900hp with no prob. 4R70W's share the alot of the same internals. If someone builds one and really knows what they are doing the shifts are great and you will have a trans to last for a very long time. You can install the 4R70W gear set in them also and don't have to have a computer to run it. 4R70W's are very prone to breakage, very worn valves and broken mechanical diodes. This is not the issuse with the AOD. I have built AOD's chirping the tires without shift kits in 2nd and 3rd and they have been in the same vehicle now for over 15 years.

I just swapped out the AOD in my Galaxie for a T5, no contest. this T5 I built my self, but the T5 I had rebuilt for my Mustang came to me in MT all the way from Tomball TX. I know a guy in your neck of the woods that rebuilds and sells T5. He is a really good guy, and reasonably priced. His name is Glen, let him know Day sent you and hill take good care of you. http://www.rosehillperformanceparts.com/

sorry for being ignorant don't know much about transmissions, i thought there were standard and auto now im hearing about c4 and aod. since i'm looking to install a 5.0 into my car i thought i'd ask. whichs cars have aod and which have c4. theres an 1985 mustang for sale with an auto and a 302. I too would like overdrive would the 1985 have a c4 or aod? the only reason i don't want a t5 is because i will be tempted to play too much and that will cause me too much money in tickets. thanks

From what i seen the aod and t5 are both kinda crappy stock but build one up it takes a beating and laughs at you.A 85 depending the car is a c5 or aod the c4 ended mid 70s if i remember right.

That 85 should have an AOD. In the early 80s ford started putting them in a lot of their cars. The one that I just pulled from my Galaxie originally came from an 84 Grand Marquees. One way to tell when looking at them is the case and bell housing are all one piece rather than the removable bell of the C4

The stock AOD and T5 are rated between 250 and 300 HP perfect for any stock application. That T5 I just installed in my Galaxie was an 85 WC model that I rebuilt with stock components other than the steel bearing retainer and counter gear stabilizer. The problem with them comes when people start putting them behind performance applications; they upgrade the motor but not the trans. The 90 -93 T5s are better and the 90 and up AODs valve body is the better. Also the biggest problem with an AOD swap is that people do not install the TV cable correctly. They think it is just for down shifting, but it really controls fluid pressures through the full range of driving and having one incorrectly set up will burn up the trans in blocks not miles. As far as the C4 they started phasing it out in the late 70s but some can still be found in the early 80s Especially in trucks.
