Default Which Transmission

First of all I have a 69 Coupe with a 351C and a C4. I want to change to either a AOD or a 5-Speed. The car will be mainly a weekend car driving to work once and a while on the freeway in Houston.

OK i have a AOD laying in the gauge that needs to be rebuilt i got it for $20 craigslist. Guy said it was slipping in first came out of a 5.0 fox body i believe. I would rebuild it stronger and put a shift kit in it.

I don’t have a manual transmission but considering i would have to rebuild the automatic any way it doesn’t matter and I know there are new pedals and lots of other little things.

What i would like to know what would be better in you opinion and also which is an easier swap. I am sure the AOD is easier just let me know what I am getting into.

There is bound to be a good transmission shop around Houston any one know of one?

Hi, im also here in Houston.

If you decide to go with the AOD, give these guys a call, they are not to far into Katy. They are not tranny guys, but they can point you in a direction. I ask them for shops all the time. They are extremly knowledgable. Awesome for parts, much easier than ordering online. They even ship parts.

If you have the AOD and like drag racing then you might as well build that, unless you really want a manual.

I love my AOD, but if you do rebuild, don't cheep out. Look for a shop that has lots of experence and you will not be disapointed.

Stay away from the AODs. IMO, it is the crummiest tranny Ford has made. If I had to do it all over again, I would put a c6 in my 88 Bronco. The OD shifts are lousy and getting them to shift with a performance kit is a pain. They are clunky and the only way I enjoy driving it is when I manually shift it. Once Ford went with the electronic version, it all got better, but the AODs suck!

Personally, I have a C4, and I really like it. It has a TCI Pro Shift Valvebody, and also the Pro Shift billet servo. It handles my 425 HP 347 with no problems. However, an overdrive would be a realy nice thing to have. However, the AOD is not your best choice. They are weak and often troublesome. Even Professional transmission companies such as TCI only rate them for 450HP or so. I would suggest that you get a Tremec. They are very strong and reliable, and since you have a Cleveland, it will bolt up just like it would to a 302.

i would just rebuild the c4. I debated this topic myself for a long while, and finnaly decided thats the best bet. 5 speed needs hydrolic clutch and someone that knows how to properly install it.(gonna cost you $). same with the AOD, like evryone has mentioned they shift lousy and very bulky/heavy. rebuild the c4 and put some nice gears in the back. 350's or soo.... my 2cents

Do you want to drive for real?

Do you want to enjoy every single turn?

Do you want better gas mileage, less weight and better performances?

Go for a T5
