Default Rebuilt 289 Acceleration

Hello me and my dad just replaced basically a whole 289 engine on a 66 mustang. We just got thorugh the break in stage and etc, had it on the road a few times, Althought when we give it a little acceleration it doesnt respond, If we have in a few inches down, then even floor it, it wont respond, nor will it shift correctly, we think it has to do with the distributer not being timed? Any advice we would appreciate it.

Timing could be off. Check it and report back. Could also be carb (specifically accelerator pump)adjustment. But check the timing first.

be aware as well that soemtimes that timing marks (the outer ring) on the harmonic balancers slip. So for that check as well that when the timing mark shows OT, the #1 piston actually IS on OT
