Ive got a picture from my first fillup at 16, the gas board has regular listed at $1.45 that was back 7 years ago. My dad says it was about 60 cents a gallon in 68 when he turned 18, so that means from like 68 to 2001(this was pre 9/11), gas went up about 85 cents in 33 years. In the 7 years since it has gone up $2.45 here to $3.90 today. It is just a supply and demand problem, but with all the work that is being upstarted in fuel alternatives, in 5-7 years the supply will probably be down to below pre 2001 levels. The thing is we will see cheap oil again, because in a few years we wont need near as much oil, as long as the president elect and congress dont get stupid and screw the pooch.

Look at the numbers, the overal gas millage today, is not much better than it was 40 years ago, everything else is better, more hp, more torque, better tires that last longer but our gas mileage still sucks.
Just my opinion, which you will not agree with but I don't care.
Rant over.
let the scolding (sp) begin...
$3.90 in Central Illinois.
I think the mileage numbers are up. The PO of my 65 289 2BBL kept mileage records and recorded (at best) 17 MPG at 70 MPH on trips. My 2005 V6 automatic Mustang has roughly the same horsepower and delivers 28 MPG at 70, 30 MPG at 65 and 32 MPG at 60. That's with cruise on, windows up and no air. Turning on the air in the summer drops me about 2-4 MPG. The engines are more efficient (fuel injected, SOC, etc) and the cars have overdrive transmissions, which helps tremendously. The cars are far more efficient today than 40 years ago, partly because they are not way overpowered. In 1965 my father's four door Buick had a 401 CI 4 BBL and probably got crap for mileage.
ok i wrote that wrong, but i saw a chart awhile back i wish i could find it agian. it showed the overall mpg of cars throughout the years and in the past 10 years or so it hasn't gone up much. back when the gov't put strict rules on the car companys, and started regulating heavily the gas mileage improved a lot.

Your dad's high on that figure. I was 16 in 68 and graduated high school in 69. Gas was around .30. It did not really start rising until 74. By 78 it was about .80 or so.

Today I saw a Buggatti Veyron roamin the streets on my way out to get some gas. Just reminded me, but I'm pretty sure the Veyron gets something like 7 MPG!!. What jacka$$ would pay that much just to spend twice as much in gas! I paid $4.45/gal today. CHEAPEST I COULD FIND! [:@][:@][:@][:@] I can only imagine how much he has to pay to fill 'er up.

Someone who is probably filthy rich and doesn't give a second thought about gas prices one bit.

The gas price in Venezuela is 14 cents a gallon, yes, it's not a typo, it's 14 cents a gallon...the cheapest in the world.

Let's invade that country right now!!!

I used to have a 1L manual Geo Metro, best car ever hahah. Used to average 55mpg and easy for me to hit 60mpg. Best trip was 78mpg over 300miles. The car was only rated at like 40-44mpg, but I made it work better...
