I have a 500 cfm Edelbrock with a manual choke (model 1402 if I recall). 500 is a somewhat conservative carb but develops plenty of power. Put it to you this way, I installed one on a similar engine to yours and only had to bring up the low idle with a quarter turn of one screw. It was perfectly tuned otherwise straight out of hte box. It comes with a great DVD to help with the install. You can find them for around 260. Also, I had never installed a carb before and did it perfect the first time using the DVD.

Oh, make sure you get electric or manual choke to match whatever you have now.

ahh stop and hold your horses.
we need to know first if you have a 2barrell or 4 barrell carb. you can't interchange them
if you have a 2barrel and need a new one you'll have to get a 2barrell. OR get a 4barrel and a 4brrell intake manifold.

can you take the aircleaner off your carb and take a picture so we know what you currently have?

Kalli is on the right track.

Also, who told you (or how did you learn) you needed a new carb? What was the diagnosis of the one that is on there?

I would definitely attempt to rebuild your carb first. It is not hard at all and fairly cheap for the rebuild kit (~$10-$20). Sounds like an aftermarket carb may be overkill for your intended uses at this point. The four barrel carbs recommended will likely requirea new intake manifold, as I'm going to guess you have got a two barrel on there now (autolite 2100).
