71 rear disc convo?
Ok guys, I was going to do a front disc convo with some reconditioned factory discs from a 71 mach I. I also am stripping the car down, primering it, and straightening the lines out, so i figured it is a prime time to change to discs all around. This is all happening as I drop in a new engine, switch to a T5, et cetera et cetera.
So down to the nitty gritty. The rear is 61 1/2" flange to flange. I was curious if anyone knew of a car I could pull rear discs from, from say a junkyard/ebay if I can. I've seen some el-cheapo kits on ebay/retailers for 'standard duty rear disc conversion' but even then they are almost a grand. I am not looking to spend exactly that much. Anyone have some info, tips, link to a write up, or personal experience? Thanks a ton guys!
i know this isnt what you asked, but i really dont see the point in rear discs. sure it sounds cool when you say you have rear disk, and they look nice. but i dont see a point to it. but its your money and you can do what you want
Rear disc do stop faster but rear pads and rotors can get pricey but with the cobra brakes mustangsteve sells you can get the pads and rotors from any auto parts store. For a daily driver id go single maybe 2 piston calipers front and the big truck rear drums. If its a show car or want amazing brakes then id go rear disc then id do 6 piston front and rear baer.
a lot of those ebay kits for sale are 92+ bubble crown vics, the police cars have vented rotors the regulars have solids. all you have to do is make or buy a small shim
It's not 'i have rear discs thing', it is reliability. You don't get fade like you do with drums on a disc brake. They are better in every aspect. Drums work well for what they cost, butI would feel safer making my 1300+mile move with the car knowing it wasn't going tohave brake fade, or struggle to stop when the drums got warm.
The car is not a numbers matching car, and it's been ran hard. The current brakes need to be replaced, I am switching to 'stock' style discs from way back when, because it is cheaper than buying a 'conversion kit' for the front end. It's still better braking power over the drums. New pads, and getting the rotor turned aren't exactly 'pricey'.
This is the 71 mustang we are talking about, the clydsdale of pony cars. I don't think i've ever heard anyone say before that it wasn't wise investment to put discs on it. It's fat and in hardly any way a real pony. The curb weight on these things were like 3700 lbs, and I do not have any aluminum replacing iron on her either. I was thinking just 2pt callipers in the back, and i think the factory discs from 71 were 2pt as well. I'm not intending for a road course setup, just something a bit more trustworthy than 37 year old drums. Change the shoes, et cetera et cetera all you like. Two or three heavy braking uses later, and they just don't hold as well. I want to have the car stopping when the brakes warm up.
Sorry to rant, but thanks for all the info guys. I was just intending a cheaper 'granda' style swap, and I appreciate all the info rmodel. Guess I'll give the local scrappers some calls later.
