Here is how you can test the coil.

1. First unhook everything from the coil to start from ground zero.
2. hook +12V to the coil "+" terminal
3. Put high tension lead in coil and secure other end to provide a spark gap somewhere to ground
4. run wire from a good ground to coil but don't connect to coil yet
5. now touch the wire from step 4 to coil "-" terminal
6. when you remove the wire from the "-" terminal you should get a spark from the high tension lead
You forgot step 7.

pick yourself off the floor when the fuel vapor explodes because the whole engine compartment is flooded fromcontinuously cranking without spark....J/K
Did you even read what I wrote??? where in there does it say anything about cranking??? You don't have to crank the engine to get spark out of a coil.

Dude, it was meant to be a joke.

And for those that didn't get it....I was implying that he had been cranking on the engine without success prior to starting your suggested procedure. I truly was not suggesting that there was anything wrong with your suggestion.

Man, what is wrong with everybody the last couple of months?....really been uptight on here.
