electrical burn question
I am having issues with my Holley blue electrical fuel pump - it was making weird noises and then quit working - but it is very hot to the touch if I leave the key on. I ran a 14 gauge wire from the fuse panel to the pump next to the gas tank in the back - it has 2 short 14 gauge wires coming out of the pump so I went with this gauge wire. Question - is my wire too small to carry the current to power the pump - it is so hot that it even changed the color on the outside of the pump (kinda scared the crap out of me when I first touched something so hot close to that much fuel)????
I read a few posts on here and everyone is talking about using a power relay and so forth. I am going to check the instructions again but I don't remember seeing any input on wire size.
Thanks

Yep, the wire is too small and more than likely causing the heat. You need some protection such as a circuit breaker (40 amp?) thru a relay that is labeled to handle the load.I would guess thatprobably no less than some 10 ga wire if not larger (the 14's may carry the current for a VERY short distance only). Also and inertia switch would be helpful in a bang up. You should find the "do's and don'ts" in the instruction sheet. If not, call the manufacture.
