starting problems
Well, I jsut got myself my first classic mustang. 1969 model with a 351W engine. I cant get the engine to start though. It is cranking over but thats all. MY first thought was out of gas, but nope. So what I did was I disconnected the gas hose that goes from the pump to the carberator and put it in a bag, when I tried to start it, the bag stayed dry, so I assume the pump is bad. Now before I go waste my time with a new one, does anyone have any tips? or think differently?
P.S. I also got several random hoses and wires that come from one thing but dont go to another...very strange. Ill get some pics and make a new post for that though. Dont worry, this should be why it wont start, the shipping company of the car said it was running before they got it on the trailor, then it either ran out of gas, or like I said, the pump died.

ya, i checked the hose and it seems good. I even pulled it off from where it connects to the pump and gas came out. The hose from the pump to carb. looks good but may be clogged. The outside is visually fine.

Take the air cleaner off. Pour in a small splash of gas. Reinstall the air cleaner in case you have a backfire. Then try to start it. If it fires up and quits after the small amount of gas you put in is gone then you know fuel or lack of is the problem.
Most likely the carb is dry, so pour in about a cup of gas, then pump the foot feet two or three times, then try to start it. If you aren't getting gas out of the pump, then probably the pump has gone south. Also, make sure you have ignition. Pop the distibutor cap, and turn the engine so the points are completely closed. Turn the key on, then use a screwdriver to mechanically open and close the points. If you get a spark, you have ignition. Get back with us if none of this works.
