68 fastback ground up build help
FirstI don't care for the whole gone in 60 seconds deal because I'm not going to build it to hear "that's the car from that movie". I'm building it because I admire the look, especially the placment of the fog lights. I've worked on my 80' jeep quite enough to know what I'm doing. I've stripped, cleaned, and rebuilt the flat 6 in it. Also, I know 4500 isn't enough for a drivable car. In all reality I'll most likely get another year model of the mustang as a daily driver ( i know it'll be beat to hell when i buy it). like I said in the beginning, I'm expecting this to take years and 25-30k. I'm not doing this for value later on or what ever. I'm building it because I want to learn with it andI want to build up a classic mustan. I'm not going to get this shell i showed you. After I learned it wasn't what i thought, I forgot about it. I know I'm gonna hear "your just a kid" or something about my age for this, but I personally dont like the look of the classic coupes AS MUCH as the fastbacks. I still respect them and I still am very interested in them when I see them, but I like the look of the FB. I am going to be saving money waiting for the right FB to come around, but it the mean time I'll probably be layin low just working for the money. I know I got fairly defense against some of these comments and all you want to do is help me which i greatly appreciate. thank you for your help everyone, especially waffle and true66. I'll probably be back in a few months with a running, beat 70's FB and a 68 shell or roller. It would definantly be better for me to start with a shell becuase everything will be brand new and built up slowly with everything exactly as I want it. The only thing I worry is the interior. hmm... a roller with restored interior, haha...dreams are what make us live our lives.....
Hey, relax, kiddo. No one heres turning you off of your dreams... we're all here because we SHARE that dream. But 25-30k is alot of money... to someone of ANY age.
Look. Keep your eye out. But your 16th bday is around the corner, are u gonna have a daily driver? What about if something happen to it or it needs service you yourself cannot do??
Plans NEVER go the way you imagine. Trust me.
The poke at overhaulin was just a joke.
Anyway, read. Learn. a jeep with a 6 isnt the same as a mustang with a 408/418... and if youre afraid of interior (which is cake...) buy a mustang interior guide. Read it. then read it again.
Good luck, boyo. Keep us updated.

the interior deal is not becuase of building it, it's in finding the panels and parts. THe guy earlier who had ground-up built his FB said it's hard to find some panels and he would never do a ground-up build again. sorry for getting so defensive. Bad day at work this morning, guys over at the shop are bitchy Im the youngest and yet I'm the one breaking up the arguments....
hmmm I dont know who Ron is, but What i was looking for is help on building a list of the small stuff that i probably would never think of until I'm finished and there's things missing. like for example, the dome light. I cought that one,but I'm just looking for pointers on the little stuff to get. Actually, might as well forget about it. I'll figure it all out as the build starts and as I move along I'll notice the little things. might as well let this thread die...
thanks for your help everyone, I'll be back as I get the project started

Just remember, you might have alittle money now, but wait till you have real bills and tuition if you go to college. Like you, I got my 67coupe when I was 15 and it was little more than rolling shell. The rolling half was shot so it had to get all new suspension, and the "shell" was missing a few panels.
Its been almost 6 year, a few grand, and lots of time, and its still no where close to being even drivable. Tuition leaves my bank account completely empty...
Find one thats already running...

my mach 1 was a project that I did with my father. I got it when I was 15, but my car was COMPLETE. Thats the main thing. I feel that if you start with a car that is a shell with no parts, you will get it and be like "where do I start?" you have nothing to go off of. I tore my car down to a shell myself, but I knew how to put most of it back since I was the one taking it apart, and I took pictures along the way and all that. the only mistake with my car is that my dad bought one that turned out to have a crap load of rust even though it was also "rust free". The PO did a damn good job covering up the rust holes in EVERY corner with ghetto patches riveted on and tack welded on, then smothed with bondo and painted. It sure tricked us.
So just no matter what you decide, don't jump on the first car you see, plan it out and try to get at least a fairly complete car that just needs work. Restore a car to new, don't build one to new. And also be sure to try and get your dad interested because it is cool to be able to work on it together. And for me, my car wouldn't look anything like it does now if it wasn't for my fathers support and interest...
and I am 17 now btw, almost 18.

dont get another mustang as a daily driver. you cant find one in "daily driver" condition for less than 4k.
get a little honda or economy car. it makes you sound filthy rich saying you will just get another mustang for a daily driver. but yet, you said you only have 4500. im almost 19, i bought my mustang as my first car on my 17th birthday with every penny of the 6k i had save my whole life. my parents made me save and deposit money for 17 years in order for me to find a car. and i did.
and my dad and i have talked about it before, and, we realize i payed WAY too much for my car. cause i only got to drive it for a year then i had to strip it completely. we didnt see all the rust on it when we checked it out multiple times. but we figured we shouldnt have paid more than 4k for it, even though it was rare. but it was my first time looking for a car. and it had been over 20 years since my dad had gone to look at a mustang to buy. and 25 years ago there was hardly any rust on mustangs.
good luck on finding a nice project car and a DD. keep us updated.

. We all get excited when there's a new face in town looking to rebuild a mustang, but all we want is for you not to make the same mistakes that we did. Your far head of me because I went out and bought mine before I joined this forum and made the same mistakes as people before me, it was a pile of junk. As for the interior parts, most are made but I still have to see the metal roof cross parts and parts for the back trim. I see more and more parts every year and this year I seea metaltrap door with the trim, I would like this for x-mas gents. Don't take what we say in a bad way, we want to help in anyway we can. And there are a lot of young people here, not just old farts....
