Yes, it's an aftermarket cover designed to help keep water out of the rusted out inner cowl panel.

yeah becarefull, look everywhere if you can jack the car up and look at the frame, floor and check everything twice don't jump into it with out checking it or be ready to spend more than you thought getting it ready. I was always looking for one never found one, I could afford. My friends dad bout one and they showed it to me I offered them 4,000 for it and he said no. about 2 years later my friend called me and said,"do you still want the mustang bring me 2,500, of course I said,"yes" with a big smile. Went to pick it up didn't check it, big mistake.Paid him took it home smiling all the way home. A few days later I started to clean it and found alot of things that needed to be fixed. I have about 4,500 in it and still needs work to be fully done. Unfortunatly I didn't know about this site at the time. It had the same cowl cover suposably to keep the leaves out but its to keep the water out, whole cowl is rusted. Pour some water over the cowl, remove the cover before doing that make sure you pour about a gallon on there some you can see if the carpet gets wet, the area that gets wet is underneath the dash. Good luck and hopefully you find out what wrong with it before you buy it that way you know if its the one for you. keep us posted

Thank you so much you could of saved me a bunch. I'll let my dad know in the morning and go check it out to see. I'm pretty sure my dad asked them what that was (he never saw one ether)and they told him it is only used in the winter to keep cold air from getting in the motor. So they might be trying to scam us eh?
i'd say so. btw, your dad's a smart guy.

that won't stop cold air by a long shot. it is most definitely for keeping water and air out of the cowl. ask to have water poured in the cowl and see what happens inside the car.

If they told him that was to keep cold air out of the engine during the winter then I'd be careful of anything else they tell you about the car. The only other possible explanation for the cover (besides preventing a water leak) would be to keep leaves out of the cowl if the car is stored outside. Do you know about using a refrigerator magnet to check for areas with too much body filler?

Maybe it's the picture, but it looks like a line of rust around the top of the windsheild also. The front valance mounts on the passenger fender look rusty.

Good luck!

I think that's just leaves as it's sitting under a tree. Not sure about the front valance mounts...

Look at frame, torque boxes are the major ones, front and rear rails are easier to replace, torque boxes are too much work in my opinon, check it out, you might have found a deal or a dud, so be careful.

Thanks, It says 289 on the sides and the cams or whatever say 289. Not sure about any of that me and my dad might go tomorrow and look it over really good. anyways here is a picture my dad took the other day. BTW Front bumper is laying on the back seat
CAUTION! Newbie talk here!

Lol, these cars do not have "Cams", they have a cam (as inone cam), and they are not stamped 289, and even if they were, you cant see it if the engine is assembled. I think you are yeferring to valve covers. They go on each head, and do not cover up a cam of any type. They cover up the valves, hence why they are called "Valve Covers."
