Looking at a 68
Hello,
My dad found a 68 mustang down the road at a shop.We checked it out just a few things here and there that need done nothing to bad like one of the chrome window seals is bubbling or whatever alsoneeds painted, Interior looks good and has new tires. The guy who showed us (not the owner) said there was a wire that needed fixed or something like that to get it running we think it's a 289 (they said a 302). Hethough the owner wasasking $2500. Just wondering how good of a deal this is. Are there anything to look for? talked to a guy at the stripe yesterday with one who said a few things to look for.
Thanks,
Nick
PS. sorry i'm 16, dad's still teaching me hahah

we need pics, 2500 is good, also most likely it came with a 302, thre were some 289s but not many. they switched to 302 in 68
floor pans need to be looked at, frame rails, pour water down the cowl vent and see if it pours into the passenger compartment, put a battery in the it and see what lights up, does the engine even turn over? does it come with power brakes? disc brakes? power steering? AC? radio?

Crawl over/under every square inch of the car looking for rust or structural damage. Everything else can be easily fixed. Pour some water into the vent at the base of the windshield and immediately check the interior floorboards for dripping water.... this cowl vent is notorious for rusting/rotting/leaking and is a biotch to repair.
If all checks out okay, jump fast because it sounds like it could be a really good deal.

i hear a lot of people listening to the stereotype of 68s transferring over to 302s, but in fact i hardly ever see 68 302s. i know they introduced the 302 in 68, but they didn't stop producing 289 cars the entire year. my car is a late (year) model 289. I guess what i'm saying is it would be nice to see some production figures on these 68s cause i think that car might equally have the 289.
Thanks, It says 289 on the sides and the cams or whatever say 289. Not sure about any of that me and my dad might go tomorrow and look it over really good. anyways here is a picture my dad took the other day. BTW Front bumper is laying on the back seat

Looking closely, there appears to be a "cowl cover" installed over the cowl. This is nota good sign. Usually these covers are used to prevent your feet from getting wet while driving in the rain as the inner cowl is rotted away.
Check it for rust.... everywhere!

Thank you so much you could of saved me a bunch. I'll let my dad know in the morning and go check it out to see. I'm pretty sure my dad asked them what that was (he never saw one ether)and they told him it is only used in the winter to keep cold air from getting in the motor. So they might be trying to scam us eh?
