if someone tells you you will only need to fix a cable to get the car started, then this is in most cases a lie.

Would at 68 with a factory installed 289 still have a 302 badge (referring to the running horse on side)? Or did they apply the correct badges to coordinate with the engine (meaning some 68 badges state 289 and later models state 302)?

check opn the VIN, trhen you'll know what the car _should have_ come with.
if you need to know, pull the starter and check the casting n#. it's only 2 screws
