AOD Anyone?
I do not like the AOD. The worst transmission Ford ever made! I have come close so many times to pulling the AOD out of my 88 Bronco and putting a C6 or C4 in it. To me, the OD gear is not worth the crappy shifts. I have put several in and none of the work with a damn. The AODE is pretty decent, but you do not have a computer to run it. Stay with aC4 and put more highway friendly rearend gears in. I do not think you will be very happy with a AOD unless you manually shift it all the time.
I have never done one of these conversions. I thought about it very seriously because I would like an auto with overdrive, but I have heard nothing good about the AODs. Only that if you put them behind a motor with more than 300 HP you are wasting your time. But like I said, I have never owned one, I have just talked to people about them and they have a very bad reputation.
I just installed my AOD into the 69 but haven't been able to take it in to have it adjusted. I am looking forward to drive the fuel saving pony.

I've had a couple of fox body mustangs with HIGH miles and an AOD, and they can take quite a beating!! I can't see them being that bad of a tranny (but it seems alot of people think that way)
What are you looking to get out of it, smooth shifting, auto or a hard street pounder. Stock, an AOD will shift the car like a family car, smooth and reliable. To get one to smash the gears with you will need to spend some money on upgradesbut well worth it. I love mine and tell you from first hand experience that they will take abuse. I ran an AOD in a fox body car with miner changes, like a better converter, extra clutches in the forward drum and a trans brake, no other changes internally at the time and the car was running low 12's with slicks all day long at the trackand then I would drive the car home.
I put one in my daughter´s 1966. The only thing that was the least bit critical was getting the TV cable properly adjusted, and even that part of the job was not all that difficult. Not even for this old guy who won´t buy an automatic for himself.
Anyway, it apparently drove just fine for her on mostly 50 mph-ish secondary highways back and forth to school (~50 miles, one way), because I never had to touch it again until she got the car into a wreck. FWIW, the engine was a mid-80´s 5.0 throttle-body EFI engine converted back to running a very small 4-barrel carb, so call it decent power for normal driving but nowhere near big power as for racing.
