1965 K Code Identification Questions
Hello,
I am new to the forum and this is my first post.I have a1965 K Code Coupe and I have a couple of questions. It is a 4 speed stick and everything is all original on the vehicle. However the motor was blown and the car needs a full restoration. I have a mechanic looking at the motor and I know that the identification VIN for the K code is in fact stamped on the block.
I don't know what the specific VIN differences are between the K Code and other mustangs, and also where to look besides the block for the appropriate K code information. What should I look for to make sure I have all the right K code components, motor wise as well as body wise.
Thanks for your time
I will post some pictures tomorrow after I check out the motor with my mechanic to see how bad the damage is the motor. I am still hopefully that perhaps the block is not cracked.

The K code engines had thicker main caps, different rods, Solid Cam & Lifters, Carburetor, Distributor and Harmonic balancer were K-code specific also. The Block is a standard block casting wise they just used the thick main caps. The Heads were different also factory screw in studs.
In addition to screw in studs, the heads had cast-in valve spring cups, making them very easy to identify.
The crank is technically a standard 289 crank, but all K code cranks are hardness tested and stamped appropriately to denote that they passed the hardness test.

Thank you both for your quick replies. My car was manufactured in March of 1965. I need to be able to go look at the car tomorrow and need to make sure where I should look on the car to make sure the engine is in fact a K-Code. What are the proper casting #'s for the heads for a March 65 car as well as the above mentioned components (main caps, crank, different rods, Solid Cam & Lifters, Carburetor, Distributor and Harmonic balancer)? Where can I go to find out all this information as well? I am new to the world of classic mustangs and I need to be able to accurately identify the engine and all the parts, I plan to completely rebuild the motor to factory original.

. It'll be worth a lot more this way.
I can't answer that, but I can send you to people who will:

I've been a member of that forum for years. It's more of an older crowd, several of which make their living off restoring Mustangs or selling vintage parts. They'll be able to tell you where to look for proper casting numbers, as well as confirm said casting numbers when you find them.
That said, I'd be suprised if you took it apart and found everything to be K code and it wasn't the original engine.

Does the VIN number appear on the block? In 1965 that would be the only engine with this done.
The block is a normal 289 block only differences would be VIN number,Thick Main Caps and Oil galley plugs screw in.
Internal part differences are Rod Bolts are 3/8" not 5/16", Solid Cam & Liftersand there is a BOB weight that slides on the crank. (The lower Timing chain sprocket will be thin to accomadate the Bob Weight).
Heads are regular 289 4V heads volume wise only difference is: Screw In studs and the Spring Cups are cast in the heads very unique.
Distributor will be a Dual Point style The Harmonic Balancer will be thick around the whole diameter (only used with the Bob Weight)and The Factory Carburetor is a Holley.
If the block does indeed have the VIN Number stamped on it then most likely the internals are correct. As far as engine build date ford production was usually within 30 days of the cars build date. (before or after) Should have C5 casting numbers for 65.
If you do have a 289 Hipo you will enjoy it when it is done these are real rev happy engines and a blast to drive.
