Default Top Replacement

Hello all.....
I am looking for the guy on here that was doing the coupe top replacement. I have searched (page by page) and can't find the original post. He had pics of the progress and as I recallhad some trouble with the rear window channellining up. I am getting ready to do mine and had some questions. Has anyone else done this themselves?

Man I understand those honey dos. Mine is sitting right now too!

Here is where I am on this. My roof is rusted out where the top meets the drip rail. (see pics) I have a perfect donor roof to get the new skin off of. When I cut the skin off of the donor will it bend or warp on me? Will it retain its shape? What, if anything, did you do that made you go "well s***!" What would you not do again or differently?

Did you decide to shave the rails? I am back and forth on that one.

I had planned to remove the rails before I even bought the car. I don't like looking at them. I sand blasted my car and found some major denting that had been repaired but with a lot of bondo. I don't like bondo so I figured I would replace the roof. Good learning experience for me as well. I didnt have any problem with the skin warping on me until I tried to sand the underside with a DA and I caused a small repairable crease in one of the sides. It will be pretty wobbly since there is no support around the edges. You will probably not be able to save your gutters but hey you may surprise me and keep them. I cut my skin off first to see exactly how the roof was attached to the car and that way I could cut my skin off the car in about the same manner so the pieces were somewhat identical. I would recommend cutting your donorlong on the pillars and small on your car so that you have material to trim when you do the final fit. place the skin on your car with the roof so that you will know about where to cut I didn't have a second set of hands to help me and ended up cutting a little short in one spot. It was an easy fix though. I also made guide lines off of the body lines on the roof with a square so that I had some kind of a reference to go off of when reinstalling. You can see those in my replacement thread. If I think of any thing else I will let you know.

Tony, Thanks for the help. I will probably dive into this next week. I will take pics along the way and post the progress. I am sure I will have more questions along the way.

My roof was completely cut off at the posts and welded back together with the donor. The shop that did it cut two posts high and the others low. The inner section ontwo of the postswas cut high and the outer section low. They did this puzzle type cut\weld to strengthen the overall weld (a lot stronger than cutting the post straight across then welding the donor right on.

Here are the pictures of the inner welds you asked for

I considered cutting the whole roof off and replacing it as a whole like posted above but I didn't want to mess with the structrural integrity of the roof.
