Alternator upgrade questions
Alright...I know a lot the classic Mustang owners frown upon modifying an original car, but I am obsessed with good sound. So now I'm running a 2000watt Kenwood system in my Mach. Obviously the amps are sucking down power faster than my cars stock alternator can make it, so I need to go bigger. I found a website selling a 105 amp upgrade kit for a 1G small case External Regulator alternator. First, is this the right application for my car? Second, is this difficult to install (anyone here ever done it?), and finally, is 105 amps gonna be enough? Thanks for any help.
Most likely the 105 amp will be enough, but if I were putting that much stereo in my car, and run the airconditioner full blast during the summer, I think I would want to step up to a 130 amp alternator. There are a lot tech articles on the internet of how to put one on a 5.0 Mustang, but I simply couldn't find any articles for your 69 swap. Basically, you will need to get the correct brackets since the ones on your 69 won't fit a 3G alternator. Try going to http://www.Performancedistributors.com and see if they have not only the 130 amp distributor, but the brackets as well. Or, maybe you could make your own brackets or have a welding shop make them for you.

What you lack in hp...you make up in Watts.
What you lack in hp...you make up in Watts.
Lets see: 746 watts per horse and summing a conversion efficiency of 0.75 and the heat loss in the Pre-Amp.
You may need to turn down your stereo just to take off from a stoplight.

No, he needs to upgrade his altenator to a 130 watt so that he can enjoy his music and have air conditioning. Let's try to show him how he can do that without all the negative comments.
Hi everybody, let me get my 2 cents in on this. My old mach 1 has 900 watt amp pushing a 10" clarion sub in the trunk, and then I have 800 watts amp pushing 2 5 1/2" clarion component speakers in the doors and 2 clarion 6" x 9" in the back seating area. I suggest you go to a the largest alternator that you can find or go to a alternator & starter rebuild shop and tell them what you need. I myself have a good shop near me and they were real happy to build me a custom alternator that put out a 170 amps. Before I did this the speakers would clip and go dead, so I know what you are going through my friend. LOL It would drian the battery so bad that I fried a brand new Die Hard the biggest I could buy to fit the hole. Thanks for the goodness of Sears Die Hard Warranty, because they replaced the battery with out batting an eye. I went to Morris & Sons starter & alternator rebuild shop and they built me a bad boy with 170 AMPS of power. 2 Kool lol I'm no young boy but I played in a rock & roll band in my young days, and went to Vietnam in the Marine Corp at 18 years old so I just might be a little hard of hearing things these days, if you know what I mean, or maybe I have selective hearing as my princess tells me very often. Hee-Hee Check my pics you will see the front speakers in the doors and the mp3,cd,fm, deck in the dash.
If the battery drain from a large amplifier is a problem, maybe a second battery in the trunk might help. Some people move their battery to the trunk for performance, so kits with cables and a tray must be available. Just think of this as performance of a different kind.
Hey 69mach1377, what I lack in brains I have in horse power. LOL , about 470 HP is a pretty good guess. and 1700 amps of good clean music. If I don't scare them with sound of pure hp, I can always make them go deaf . LOL and your right about the nos alternator the engine would almost go dead. They use a heavy duty internal parts that they use in fire engines and emergency equipment to build the them for a 170 amp output.

It'll cost, but not as much as what you already have in to it. Also, will help weigh that rear down to help with oversteer.
